So, event is over, we can take a breath now. I am yet to get a final total but I know for a fact that we hit above and beyond our $1,000 goal. All the funds are going directly to the Leukaemia Foundation. Apart from raising funds I also want to raise awareness, I have some facts below that are super important to understand. Please take a read.

The impact of blood cancer

  • More than 13,000 Australians are expected to be diagnosed with a blood cancer or a related blood disorder this year.

  • To put this in perspective, that is 35 people every day; or one person every 41 minutes across Australia.

  • From a local perspective, in Western Australia we have 25 blood cancer diagnoses each week.

  • You may be surprised to know that blood cancer is the third most common cause of cancer death in Australia, claiming more lives than breast cancer or melanoma.

  • Leukaemia is not just a young person’s cancer; it can develop in anyone, of any age, at any time.

  • In many cases, treatment for blood cancer must start within 24 hours of diagnosis.

  • If the person lives in rural or regional WA, like you and I, it means leaving work, school and family and relocating to Perth for treatment for anywhere between three months and two years

Leukaemia Foundation gets NO funding from the government, therefore, all funds need to be raised by the community. I also want everyone to remember that the Leukaemia Foundation is also about research, that's not just research for blood cancers and blood diseases, they want to find a cure. A cure for Leukaemia could also extend to a cure for other forms of cancers.

I was asked a few times on Saturday why the picnic. I hate cancer - I think cancer is a giant jerk and it doesn't care who it hurts, takes out everything in its way. I know I can't solve the worlds problems but my hatred for cancer is where I am going to start my quest to change the world and the Leukaemia Foundation needs our help.

While I'm at it, my name is Taylor. I initially started this blog anonymously because I don't want it to be about me. It still won't be about me but I found it difficult to ask for support for our Picnic on the Swan with no face. I work full time, I gym, I adventure and family is the most important thing to me. I look forward to so many more adventures with you all. The next event is already been planned so if you missed out this time don't worry you have another chance to get on board :)
