Who are you doing it for?

I don't think I am alone when I say there have been many times in my life where I have had an internal war about who I am, who I want to be and where I fit. I have always been what people call a 'floater' never quite fit in with particular groups, even in school never quite fit into the exact box that was required of me. It was not until I got older that I found out that I can make that box myself and its not up to other people to define the edges.
To be completely honest I don't think I have really defined those edges myself at 27 years old, I am quite unsure if I ever will. Our boxes are made up of all different experiences and people around us. To attempt to be technical this is called learned behaviour. Not to be one to be caught up in technicalities but given that we define ourselves by actions and reactions if we continue learning and teaching ourselves lessons for the rest of out life than we never stop defining those edges of the box right?

Well that got serious didn't it. I was asked a question today, what advice would I give someone when joining the workforce or taking a next step in life. My instant thought was something I have always been told 'Be yourself'. Simple yet effective. Thinking about it deeper it is also quite important to remember who you are doing things for, we also need to remember that while it is important do think of others. It is also important that we out ourselves first especially in the times to define those edges.
I guess what I am getting at is a reminder. A reminder to be ourselves. Don't try to impress other people all the time especially if you aren't impressed yourself.
